AAIRmail Postcard 2: A Catastrophic Silence
Field Recordings Volume 2: A Catastrophic Silence. Acoustics, Electromagnetics, Cinematic Soundtracks: three ways of listening to the city. Something heard, felt, perhaps only dreamt; this project records, listens to, and speculates on the sound of London, post-catastrophe. Will communication be possible? As the noise floor drops, will a new soundscape emerge?
Project by the AA Summer School 2008 unit headed by Douglas Moffat, Joshua Bonnetta and Steve Bates (catastrophicsilence.tumblr.com). Available at AA Bookshop and the AA Photo Library, 36/37 Bedford Square, London - or purchase here online for £3. #

AAIRmail Postcard 1: Radio Anacapri
Documentary field recordings were made on the island of Capri, Italy between July 18–25, 2006 as a collaborative project between Diego Cortez of lostobject.org and the AA Independent Radio. An extensive collection of concrete audio feeds from sectors of nature, machine, and man, these recordings document the life of Capri today. Small microphones worn in the ears captured sounds distinctly in space and in time, depending on physical surroundings and the location and the nature of each source. The resulting listening experience is how we perceive sounds in space every day: as a composition. Available at AA Bookshop and the AA Photo Library, 36/37 Bedford Square, London - or purchase here online for £3. #
AAIR001 Released 30/12/2007 Status —
Audiolounge 2009
The audiolounge installation is based on a workshop organised by Jeroen van Ameijde (Digital Prototyping Lab) and Umberto Bellardi Ricci (AA Radio) designed in conjunction with a group of students. AudioLounge is based on different sound types and the related morphologies. Three principal spaces were created to provide different sound experiences: a seated space for playing music, a cave-like enclosure for interactive sounds and a shielded listening position for interviews and documentaries. After a day-long charrette and a session with ARUP Acoustics, the piece was cut and assembled out of Polystyrene sheets in the Digital Prototyping Lab. It has three built-in audio sources for music, interviews and sound content from aair.fm. AA Bar until January 30, 2009. #

Radio Anacapri – field recordings project, Capri, Italy
In collaboration with Deigo Cortez of lostobject.org, 9 AA Radio students spent twelve days in Capri recording audio feeds from the island. Binaural microphones (worn like headphones in the ears) were used to capture the sounds which are the life of Capri, its towns, waters, caves, inhabitants, visitors, heat, air, sky, night....The island and its sounds can be explored at the website radioanacapri.com, created by AA Radio students especially for this project. The first AAIRmail postcard is a selected compilation of raw field recordings and can be purchased at the AA Photo Library or online (see first release in this section). With thanks to the inhabitants of Capri, Soundman Rolf, and the AA. #
